Through casting one model as an example of mental health, amongst a model with visible disability/limb difference and another with unseen disability, we created a sisterhood of empowerment and understanding. The attitude and individualism seen throughout the poses, makeup, hair and nails conveys the message that despite personal setbacks in life, nothing can diminish our innate skillsets and power. I wanted to explore Do-It-Yourself culture to create a never seen before vision of access, self-worth and community. Our photographer, Shingi Rice, was also a recipient of open-heart surgery in 2013 and lives with ongoing medical needs.
